Paul Fonken was a full-time, active medical staff member at Estes Park Medical Center from 1990 through 1997, serving as Chief of the Medical Staff in 1993 and 1994. He then helped to introduce Family Medicine in Kyrgyzstan and other Central Asian Republics. In May, 2005, he rejoined the EPMC team long-term, in conjunction with his work at Timberline Medical, LLC.
Dr. Fonken is a third-generation Coloradoan who graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and then completed his Family Medicine residence in Greeley. Since then, he has remained certified by the American Board of Family Practice. In 2003, the American Association of Family Practice granted him the status of "Fellow," and the Minister of Health of Kyrgyzstan honored him with their country's "Outstanding Medical Worker Award."
Dr. Fonken and his wife, Erin, and their children, Isaac, Elizabeth, and Matthew, all enjoy mountains, outdoor activities, and international interaction, particularly in particularly in Russian, a language that they all speak.
